Owner and winemaker Matt Smith launched Blacksmith Cellars in 2003 after a distinguished academic career in enology and stints of working with other award-winning wineries. His wines are truly his own creations as he does it all: tending the grapes, hand-sorting and crushing, punching down, pressing, blending, and bottling. His hard work and meticulous attention to detail shine through in top-quality, uncompromising wines. Blacksmith Cellars wines celebrate the artistry, craftsmanship, and tradition of great independent winemaking. 2007 Chenin Blanc Monterey The nose of this Chenin Blanc explodes with honeyed citrus aromas followed by notes of rose petals and flint. The wine exhibits wonderful breadth on the palate with a medium-bodied personality packed with pineapple, lemongrass, pears and hints of grapefruit. Non-malolactic fermentation creates a delicious fruitiness and lively acidity that compliments the underlying minerality of the finish. 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley Fragrant bouquet offers voluptuous, chocolate-infused cherries with hints of fresh pipe tobacco and cola. Concentrated, full-bodied flavors of crème de cassis, blueberries, vanilla and fresh cocoa persist through the long finish. Medium-bodied with a richly textured mid-palate and fine grain tannins, this wine will age magnificently over the next five to eight years. 2004 Syrah Alexander Valley A secluded patch of hillside at the Skipstone Ranch Vineyard produces low crops with small berries for great varietal intensity. The wine was fermented in one-ton bins and gently punched down by hand to ensure high-quality tannins. The combination of aging in new and used barrels highlights the Syrah character and the addition of 7% Tannat adds a host of exotic spices to the nose and richens the mouth feel. | TOP |
