After a 20-year career at Chalone Vineyard making critically-acclaimed wines, Michael Michaud started his own Michaud Vineyard label. The intense conditions of the Chalone Appellation, including daily temperature fluctuations of 40 to 60 degrees, create unique growing conditions which yield a great depth of varietal flavor as well as a defined complement of mineral and spice characters. Michaud wines reveal both the intensity and the subtlety of the place where the grapes were grown and characteristically can be aged for several years. 2004 Chardonnay Chalone Appellation Peach, nectarine, apricot, and apple aromas and flavors are complemented by minerality. Subtle French oak contributes to a multilayered, mouth-filling wine. 2005 Marsanne Chalone Appellation Silver Medal, Finger Lakes International Wine Competition 2004 Pinot Noir Chalone Appellation Good concentration and depth of flavor with balanced acidity and tannin. Complex flavors suggest ripe blackberry, currant and cherry, with subtle hints of herbs and spices. Gold Medal, San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition Silver Medal, Finger Lakes International Wine Competition 2004 Sangiovese Chalone Appellation Mineral-like terroir and French oak contribute to a richly textured wine with a lingering finish. Red cherry, cranberry and pomegranate flavors. 2003 Syrah Chalone Appellation Rocky, mineral-laden soil restrains Syrah’s natural vigor. Wine from these vines is very dark, supple, and substantial in weight on the palate. Moderate, silky tannins surround vivid flavors of black cherry and blackberry, with a hint of black pepper.
